Welcome

Holly Combs

Thanks for stopping by my corner of the world to read my tales of life, love and adventure.

I’m a writer, and the thoughts rolling around in my head — big ideas and little ones — need a place to land. So here I am, blogging away, reminding myself that it is the little things that bring joy to my life.

I married my best friend in October, 2010, and we now have a growing family that includes our first-born Fiona, Chappy (equine), Ginger (canine), Jane (caprine) and a few random chickens that are as yet unnamed. (We also used to have Gidget & Fidget (marsupial) and Kili & Fili (hippocampus).)

I have lived in just about every region from east coast to west and currently make Virginia Beach my home. I love adventure, and I’m learning how to find it in the little things in life. The simple joys of reading a good book, riding my horse, and drinking a cup of hot tea are wonderful reminders of that. And a weekend of camping or cabining is absolutely heaven as far as I’m concerned.

I was fortunate to land the job of my dreams before I even finished graduate school, and I get to write for an amazing international humanitarian aid organization. And, after all, getting paid to write is every writer’s dream come true! I also do a bit of freelancing (drakeink.com) and even some creative writing when I have time.

Husband is a professional chef — and, yes, I know I am lucky. You can learn more about what’s going on in his garden and kitchen at surferbobs.com. You might even pick up a few tips or a new recipe to try!

I think like most bloggers who write about loss, I never expected that to be a theme of my writing. Alas, in 2012 we tragically lost Husband’s brother and so I have found myself processing grief through the written word. Can I ask you to bear with me during the heavy times and rejoice with me during the good?

In March, 2014, Husband and I purchased our first home — a huge step for us and one we’re extremely excited about. Now we’re in the process of updating a 1980’s ranch in the country and making it our own.

In January, 2016, we welcomed our first tiny bundle into this world — Fiona Rose Marie. She has changed our lives utterly and completely and we are absolutely in love. The honor and responsibility of raising this beautiful girl is perhaps the greatest adventure we have ever undertaken.

I named my blog after a song I absolutely adore, “Never Saw Blue Like That” by Shawn Colvin. It was the first song Husband and I danced to at our wedding. (Lyrics can be found here.)

Thank you for sharing your blog with the cyber world. What a fun thing to do and it’s cool to see what Virginia Beach looks like from a different person’s view.My son is on a mission for our church there and he just came back to that area for the winter. He was there last winter with the record snowfall you had and sent pics of the incredible amount of snow you got but could’nt take any pics at the beach so thank you for sharing. You have a beautiful horse and I love them too and used to have one when I was young.I love dolphin’s as well and sea horses as a pet(never knew that you could have them).Cool! Anyway my husband loves to write and read as I do as well(the reading part) and I’m going to encourage him to do this.He may not want to put pics up but this is a good idea. Thanks for sharing and you are very blessed to be doing what you love to do!

I love my sugar gliders! I have wanted a pair since I was in high school, so for Christmas my husband surprised me with Gidget and Fidget =).
