FBI Special Agent Serena Jones arrives on Martha’s Vineyard with her family, ready for a bit of R & R and a lot of reminiscing as they celebrate the engagement of an old family friend. But when a suspicious death tied to an antiquities smuggling ring interrupts her picture-perfect trip, she’s soon entangled in the investigation.
Propelled into danger, Serena must stay the course and solve this case before anyone else dies. But just how is she supposed to do that when the two men in her life arrive on the scene, bringing with them a boatload of romantic complications–and even a secret or two?
Similarly to the previous book in the series, it was the characters that stood out to me in Over Maya Dead Body.
They lead pretty good, stable lives, without soap opera-style problems, but to me that makes them all the more relatable. I feel like I could be friends with Serena. She struggles with so many of the day-to-day issues a young professional like myself might encounter…with a dead body or two thrown in for good measure. Her family and friends are each unique characters that one might find in any family circle.
Romance plays an even greater role in this installation of the series than in the previous book, which was a little less enjoyable for me, but was still fun. (Plus, you finally get to find out which of the two men she chooses!)
The plot was relatively simple and straightforward. At times, I wondered why Serena couldn’t figure out what was going on, because it was becoming very evident to me who was behind the crimes, but in real life nothing is as “clear” as it is in a book, so I’m willing to give her a little leeway on that.
I stayed up later than I should have reading this novel, as it pulled me into Serena’s world. And it left me wishing there would be more Serena Jones Mysteries down the road.
